Señora Maria Luísa Camacho de López |
This beautiful woman, now elderly, was the impetus for the appreciation of these textiles among the self proclaimed Huipilistas. Many of her devoted disciples are high profile, highly educated and accomplished women (including Sandra Cisneros the author and Frances Herrera the attorney) with a mission to pass along the knowledge that Sra. López has given them. To honor her contribution to our cultural understanding, Huipiles: A Celebration has made certain elements of this exhibition a benefit for Sra. Camacho de López.
Lionel and Kathy Sosa have each done a painting of Mrs. López. Both will be offered for sale, with the proceeds going to Sra. López. It is hoped that the paintings will go into a prominent private collection, a corporate collection or be donated by the purchaser to the Smithsonian Institution Latino Center.
Mrs. López has spent her life collecting these textiles and teaching others about their meaning, history and worth. She has amassed an important and valuable collection. It is the wish of the Huipilistas that the collection be purchased from her in its entirety so that her work may be preserved for the historic and artistic record. Her collection is in the process of being documented, after which it will be appraised by an expert in Mesoamerican textiles. After which, we will approach sponsors who have expressed an interest in this component.
